Step 1: Name your character. (Be creative, but also realistic. Think about time period/place/status. A high class woman in Victorian London is not going to be named Haru Takahashi, just like a Japanese warlord is not likely to be named James Walker. If you are completely stumped for a name, try using a Name Generator.) - to paraphrase basically

Step 2: Decide their appearance. (Again, consider the time/place you are making them for. A princess in a medieval setting won't be running around with short hair in men's clothing (unless, of course, she is a run away and this is important to her character!) Also think about why they look/dress the way they do. Does it make sense for a woman on the battle field to wear bikini armor? Or a ninja to run around in a fully white outfit? Why does your vampire wear so many chains on his clothes? Think through every choice before you make it.) - to paraphrase basically

Step 3: Create a well rounded back story. (What are their talents? How did they achieve this skill? Where did they come from? What is their back story and how does this effect their choices? No one is perfect, make sure that your character is not.) - to paraphrase basically
